EEMODS’26 in Brisbane, Australia
The next international conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems (EEMODS) will take place in the second half of October 2026 in Brisbane, Australia. This will be a special edition of EEMODS, celebrating 30 years of the conference. EEMODS’26 will be organised by Queensland University of Technology. Stay tuned!

EMSA@20th Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week
The 20th Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week of the International Energy Agency took place in Paris on 7 – 11 April 2025. It consisted of five parallel courses on energy efficiency, covering buildings, appliances, industry, transport and indicators & evaluation. The event drew more than 180 participants from 50 countries. EMSA updated participants in the industry and appliances courses on electric motors.

News
European Union regulatory update
- Electric motors & Variable Speed Drives (EC 2019/1781): A review of the regulation has started. Preliminary investigations are being carried out with the help of consultants, before engaging with stakeholders via a call for evidence. The revision will be done within the framework of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation 2024/1781, whereby aspects like durability, circularity and the overall reduction of the environmental and climate footprint of products will be considered.
- Circulators (EC 641/2009): Revision ongoing. A call for evidence was running until 11 April, after which the impact assessment will be finalised.
- Water pumps (EC 547/2012): Revised regulation expected to be adopted by end 2025, prior to which stakeholders and WTO will have an opportunity to provide feedback (expected in the fall).
- Industrial fans (EC 2024/1834): the revision was adopted in July 2024 with Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1834. The regulation covers 'fans driven by motors with an electric input power between 125 W and 500 kW'. It sets revised energy efficiency thresholds and establishes upgraded information requirements, including information about fan performance at part load. It also sets requirements on the availability and maximum delivery time of spare parts, as well as access to repair and maintenance information for professional repairers.
- Air Compressors: no new requirements are foreseen in near future.

China regulatory update
- Permanent magnet motors (GB 30253-2024): the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) will be raised to the IE4 level, from 1 October 2025.
- High voltage motors (GB 30254-2024): the Minimum Energy Performance Standard will be raised to the IE3 level, from 1 September 2025.
- Centrifugal pump units: the MEPS development is launched, the MEPS will cover the pump unit consisting of Variable Speed Drive, motor and water pump.

First country in Asia to require IE4 for induction motors
Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) decided to set the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for low-voltage, three-phase, squirrel-cage induction motors ranging from 75 to 200 kW from 1 July 2025 at IE4. This requirement mirrors the EU’s IE4 requirement for the same size range of electric motors. |

Testing the efficiency of air compressors in different countries
EMSA is currently finishing up its small scale Round Robin for air compressor packages. The final report including a measurement Guide and an excel for calculating the isentropic efficiency will soon be available. Stay tuned!

Demand flexibility and motor systems
EMSA is working on identifying and monitoring research on technologies, programmes and benefits of demand flexibility through electric motor systems, specific applications and/or sectors. EMSA will highlight selected industrial case studies. Furthermore, policy options to increase the use of demand flexibility potential in motor systems will be identified.

How to overcome the barriers to the adoption of Wide Bandgap Industrial Variable Speed Drives?
EMSA in cooperation with PECTA developed a research roadmap for wide bandgap power semiconductors in industrial Variable Speed Drives. The Research Roadmap aims to facilitate the adoption of this new technology by addressing key challenges with dedicated research topics over the course of the next few years. In November 2024 a webinar was dedicated to this topic. See video and slides. |

What is the status of Minimum Energy Performance Standards for electric motors worldwide?
EMSA published a global overview of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for electric motors. Both a map and a table with more details are available. They show well how MEPS for motors are progressing. A webinar in November 2024 was dedicated to MEPS for motors, Variable Speed Drives, pumps, fans and compressors. See video and slides. |

European Motor Renovation Initiative (EU MORE) project conclusion
The EU-MORE project aimed to capture the benefits of replacing old, inefficient motors at a faster rate, through proposing new policies, developing tools to predict their impact and to monitor and evaluate their implementation. During the course of the project, comprehensive reports were published, including a review of motor policies and their replication in Europe, estimating the stock of motors in Europe, analysing circularity and end-of life practices. All reports and a brochure summarising the project results are now available. |

How to establish regulations for motor systems? What are good policy approaches?
U4E is about to publish its updated:
- Model Regulation Guidelines for electric motor systems, with templates for establishing regulations for motors, Variable Speed Drives, fans, pumps, compressors.
- Policy Guide for electric motor systems, including an overview of resources, tools and best practices globally, as well as the integrated policy approach, differentiated for new and already existing equipment.
The reports serve as single-stop reference sources for emerging markets and developing economies' policy makers. |

EMSA is the Electric Motor Systems Platform of the International Energy Agency's Technology Collaboration Programme on Energy Efficient End-use Equipment 4E. Currently Australia, Austria, Denmark, European Commission, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, USA and Switzerland participate in EMSA. Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom participate in other 4E Platforms.
